To Eat You I Must Kill You

No arrow of enlightenment fletched with the feathers of truth,
No ruthless predator preying on the slow, pruning the herd
No metaphorical eternal struggle
And nothing like a simile.

No mustachioed Marlin Perkins,
No battered Range Rover,
No tawny lions of the Serengeti,
No howling hyena bitches.
No circle of life.

Just one hawk,
One dove,
In my front yard.
The dove lost.

Great poem. I loves seeing the birds of prey come through our area. I have yet to capture them on film though.

Deb,
To be completely honest the bird in the photo is not the hawk but it was as close as I could get with the photos I have. The actual event happened right in front of me. I was inside the screen door watching the birds feed when I heard a loud thump. I looked to my right and the hawk had the squirming dove pinned to the ground. The hawk then flew off with the dove in his talons leaving behind a small nest of feathers. It was a brief but stunning peak into a world we rarely see.

That would have been very cool to witness, IMHO.
